Following our theme for Castello di Potentino’s Study of the Senses programme which centres on the importance of fermentation in food, we are very pleased to have the expert on all things cheese, Juliet Harbutt returning to host a weekend of tasting, talks and a demonstration of cheesemaking at Potentino. An amusing and very knowledgeable speaker, she was introduced to us by our great family friend Prue Leith and hosted an inspiring tasting of classic and lesser known Italian cheeses at the castle last year.  We all learnt and ate a vast amount and insisted she came back this year.

Juliet Harbutt, one of the world’s foremost authorities on Cheese, created and ran the British Cheese Awards for 21 years, has judged at the Swiss, French, NZ and American Cheese Awards and written numerous books and articles on cheese. The World Cheese Book, published in 9 languages, won Best Food Book in 2010 and has sold over 90.000 copies!

Radio 4’s Food Programme recently featured Juliet in their prestigious "My Life in..." series.

Welcome to the Castello di Potentino

Welcome Drinks and introduction to the Castle

The dinner takes the form of a tutored tasting featuring superb classic and lesser-known Italian cheeses. Juliet will explain how you can learn to judge a cheese by its cover, describe the magic behind each cheese and what creates their unique character and match them with wines and grappa from Potentino's cellars.

Fascinating and always amusing this is the beginning of your journey to becoming a cheese addict (if you aren't already)… Salads from the Castle garden, local breads and a deliciously light pudding will be served to balance the cheese.

Sunday 30th July
Cheese and Cheesemaking with Juliet Harbutt and Caseficio Murceti

Juliet and the local cheesemakers from Caseficio Murceti will show you how to make ricotta and pecorino cheeses. Juliet will explain how the recipe is changed to create the 7 key types of cheese by which all cheeses can be identified and how each behaves when cooked. 

The team at Potentino will prepare a lunch down at Potentino’s Vegetable garden in amongst the small plots of vineyard and fruit trees along the valley.

You will be able to take some time and find a spot to read a book or sit by the pool and enjoy the countryside around Potentino. In the early evening, Charlotte will give guests a tour of the Winery.

Dinner will be prepared by Michelin-starred chef, Roberto Rossi from il Silene.

Juliet will share with you a few very special cheeses she has brought with her and show you the art of creating the perfect cheeseboard.

Monday 31st July

On Monday, we will head out into the Val d'Orcia recently included in the World Heritage sites by UNESCO, or visit the beautiful gardens at La Foce estate owned by the Origo family.

We will be tasting Donata Origo’s award-winning olive oils made in her own micropress at the stunningly restored fortress and farmhouses of Chiarentana and have lunch at her beautiful property.

We will have a quiet dinner back at Castello di Potentino where along with Juliet we will be delighted to answer all your questions about what we have covered over the course and try some of the wines with the different cheeses to which make the best pairings.
